Matthew DiCianni was featured in a Notre Dame Lawyer magazine article discussing his dedication to pro bono work. Matthew shared that his passion for helping others was sparked during four years of global travel after earning his political science degree, including teaching English in South Korea and Honduras. Witnessing extreme poverty, particularly in the Philippines, inspired him to pursue a legal career focused on aiding the less fortunate, shaping his approach to law at Notre Dame Law School.
Matthew’s pro bono work has had a profound impact. For example, he represented a mother and son from El Salvador fleeing MS-13 gang violence, ultimately securing legal protection for them after a six-year process. His work continues to focus on helping Central American immigrants, and the National Immigrant Justice Center recognized his efforts with their Rising Stars Award.
Matthew shared, “What I want to do is ultimately help people who have not been as fortunate as I have. The idea of giving back was something that was emphasized strongly throughout my time at Notre Dame, and it’s something I’ve carried with me into my legal practice.” He added that he hopes to dedicate his career entirely to pro bono work after retirement, continuing to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.
