The SBA Helped Investigate a Business Employing Undocumented Workers. Is its Mission Changing?

Scott Bettridge was quoted in an Inc. article discussing how the Trump administration shifted some federal agencies, including those not traditionally involved in immigration, like the Small Business Administration (SBA), toward a stronger immigration enforcement agenda. The SBA, which typically supports small businesses through loans and services, has started publicizing investigations into businesses hiring undocumented workers, a move that seems new and unusual for the agency.

Scott explains that the SBA is “not acting as immigration law enforcement agents, but rather implementing measures to prevent the misuse of taxpayer funds based on legal eligibility criteria.” He emphasizes that the agency’s role is to ensure “eligible individuals and businesses can access their programs and funding, with a focus on citizenship and legal residency requirements,” rather than conducting enforcement raids.
