Rick's practice is focused on high net worth and ultra high net worth estate planning, providing highly tailored strategies to preserve wealth and minimize tax exposure. With extensive experience in complex trusts and succession planning, Rick is sought after for his integrity and discretion. He builds trusted relationships while guiding clients through sophisticated planning to secure their legacy.
Before dedicating his practice solely to estate planning, Rick spent most of his five-decade legal career advising business owners and managers on a wide range of corporate issues, including acquisitions, dispositions, reorganizations, and financing transactions. That extensive background, especially his prior role as vice president and general counsel of a substantial group of privately held companies, gives Rick a crucial insider's view. In that role, he managed legal affairs and oversaw banking, insurance, and tax departments. He uses this holistic perspective to integrate legal advice with tax, accounting, finance, and insurance issues for his estate planning clients.
In 2026, Rick joined Cozen O'Connor, along with his colleagues from Moss & Barnett, where he served on the board of directors and as chair of the firm’s commercial department. Rick also previously sat on the Minnesota State Bar Association committee, which advises the legislature on technical revisions to the corporate law statute. He earned his B.A., graduating phi beta kappa, from the University of Minnesota, and his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School.
