Am Law 100 Firm Cozen O’Connor Finalizes its Merger with Minneapolis-based Moss & Barnett

Monday, January 5, 2026

MINNEAPOLIS, January 5, 2026 — Am Law 100 firm Cozen O’Connor today announced it has completed its acquisition by merger of Moss & Barnett, one of Minnesota’s leading law firms. The combination adds more than 50 attorneys to Cozen O’Connor’s Minneapolis footprint — further advancing its strategic buildout across the Midwest and bringing the firm’s overall roster to over 1,000 attorneys located in 35 offices across two continents.

“This merger marks yet another major step in our plan to significantly expand our transactional and commercial practices across key Midwest markets,” said Michael J. Heller, Cozen O’Connor’s Chairman and CEO. “The combination greatly expands our footprint in the Twin Cities, home to the highest concentration of Fortune 500 companies per capita among large U.S. metropolitan areas. It also deepens our bench significantly in the regulatory, transactional, real estate, and financial practice areas — all of which will greatly benefit our clients throughout the Midwest and beyond.”

Founded in 1892, Moss & Barnett brings substantial experience serving businesses, families, and individuals in Minnesota and beyond across a wide range of important practice areas, including Real Estate, Corporate, Regulatory/Government, IP, Energy & Public Utilities, Litigation, Real Estate Finance, Trusts & Estates, and Family Law. Its Energy practice is Chambers USA ranked, and its client base includes leading players in the technology and environmental sustainability space, as well as financial enterprises funding commercial and residential real estate, transportation infrastructure, and energy projects throughout the United States.

The resulting Minneapolis presence of more than 70 lawyers — along with more than 50 in Cozen O’Connor’s Chicago office — brings the firm’s Midwest team to over 120, as well as expanding Cozen O’Connor’s nationally regarded Real Estate practice to nearly 100 lawyers, firm wide.

“We’re both multidisciplinary, client-centered law firms that deliver seamless, team-based, custom counsel,” said Brian T. Grogan, Moss & Barnett’s President and CEO. “Both firms are regarded as innovators and both of us are well-known for delivering exceptional value to our clients. As a full-service law firm with a global reach, Cozen O’Connor’s complementary legal resources — practice groups and ancillary businesses — will benefit our clients significantly.”

Cozen O’Connor will temporarily relocate its Minneapolis operations from 33 South 6th Street to Moss & Barnett’s existing location at 150 South Fifth Street. This combined office will be led by office managing partners Jana Aune Deach (M&B) and Steven Silton (Cozen O’Connor) and vice chair office managing partners Kelly C. Engebretson (M&B) and Heather Marx (Cozen O’Connor). The firm is looking for a permanent location for the more than 120 attorneys and business professionals, with the hopes of opening the new office during the second quarter of 2027.

Grogan joins Cozen O’Connor as a shareholder, as does Timothy L. Gustin, chair of Moss & Barnett’s Real Estate and Real Estate Finance practices.
